If the commenters were 'simply stating both sides of the story' we'd be happy to publish them. Unfortunately a few people wrote comments that spewed anger, misinformation and words that were, at best, insulting and offensive, and, at worst, threatening and upsetting.
This is not Facebook or Instagram. We expect Hinesburg citizens to speak with civility and respect regardless of where they stand on an issue.
I agree that conversations in Hinesburg should stay civil, but we also shouldn’t overlook legitimate concerns about the protest.
Some parents are troubled that it occurred during school hours, involved students leaving school property, and happened without clear prior communication to families. People are also upset by accounts that teachers were closely involved in facilitating the protest, and many believe schools should not be organizing or supporting political demonstrations during the school day. The issue isn’t politics — it’s parental awareness and student safety.
A straightforward conversation about communication, safety, and expectations would help maintain trust between schools and families.
Im guessing they ran this by their parents, and 7th and 8th in my book are old enough to make thier own choices. It sounds like Royal did all the proper leg work to put this together, and also by 7th and 8th grade Im sure they have seen and said more than flipping the bird. I would be very pround of my child for doing something like this.
Thank you for taking the time to comment. I'm sorry you felt it was inaccurate; for the record, we talked with several people involved; we just didn't quote them.
And as to teachers escorting the students, we imagine you (and anyone) would be upset if they hadn't. Their charge is to protect the students and accompanying students outside while they stand on the sidewalk on a busy road seems entirely appropriate and necessary.
But I appreciate your right to express that you feel teacher involvement of any kind was inappropriate.
Why is the Record deleting comments that are simply stating both side if the story? Seems biased.
Jack, thanks for your comment.
